But my child won't read!

No worries! Did you know you can improve literacy and language without reading the text? YES you can! Here are some of my tips for engaging children that want nothing to do with books. Picture of my wild boys who are now avid readers!

  1. First and foremost, look at the TYPES of books you are reading! Are they engaging and interesting to your child? Check out my Top 10 List for ideas on the best books to engage your young kiddos. Examples: books with textures, lift the flap books, sound books, books that incorporate movement. But most importantly choose what interests YOUR child!

  2. You and your child each have your own book. Read yours while you allow your child to look through their book! They are hearing the language even if they are not connecting it with the pictures.

  3. As your child quickly flips through the pages, try labeling and describing the picture rather than reading the words. This might be as simple as using animal sounds to describe the picture! You can also paraphrase! Reading while the child plays is also a great strategy for incorporating literacy.

  4. Start slow! We started with tolerating one page! Now we are onto short books....sometimes!

  5. Incorporate books into your routine! Our favorite times to read are typically before bed and when we wake up. Children *tend* to be calmer and more likely to sit and listen. The child can have their milk, water, etc. while they sit or lay and listen to their story. Refer to #3. Start slow~a short book.

  6. Children want to MOVE so choosing books that incorporate movement are helpful in engaging the reader.
